Following their father’s death at the hands of Dr. Van Helsing (Peter Fonda), New York-based vampire Nadja (Elina Löwensohn) and her devoted companion Renfield (Karl Geary) are drawn close to her estranged and ailing twin brother Edgar (Jared Harris). As Van Helsing pursues this “fiend” from Manhattan to Transylvania, his nephew Jim (Martin Donovan), Jim’s wife Lucy (Galaxy Craze), and Edgar’s private nurse Cassandra (Suzy Amis) are all drawn into an escalating battle between bloodlines.
Merging elements from Lambert Hillyer’s Dracula’s Daughter (1936) with André Breton’s landmark surrealist novel Nadja (1928), writer-director Michael Almereyda conjures a rare vampire film steeped in many genres, yet beholden to none. Executed produced by David Lynch, Nadja fuses shimmering black-and-white 35mm with hallucinatory Pixelvision video, creating one of the most inspired visions to emerge from the 90s independent cinema movement.
